She’s young, feisty, has a passion for shoes, drives a fast car and runs marathons. She adores all flowers … especially seasonal and British grown varieties and loves the fact that she can make a difference to customers with flowers. Oh yes and she’s just been selected by John Lewis to create a brand new concept flower shop in their flagship Oxford Street store. She is Alexandra Lyons, one of a handful of florists awarded the prestigious accreditation Master Florist . |
Alex, who’s run her own business for the last 12 years, believes passionately in old fashioned service and morals coupled with high style design and quality. “As a florist you get involved in every part of a customer’s life. Whatever they are buying flowers or plants for it’s an ‘event’. Happy ones, like birthdays, weddings or new arrivals. Sad ones, like funerals or because someone is ill. But whatever it is flowers make a difference and that’s what makes it so wonderful because every day you’re dealing with real emotion.” |

“One of my biggest passions is seasonal flowers … whether that’s the first daffodils or the year or the first peonies in the summer. Which is why, wherever possible, I always try to buy British flowers. Not just because they are fantastic quality but because the carbon footprint is so much better. As a professional florist my job is to source the best flowers I can in a way that works for the supplier and the environment” |
And when it comes to design she’s just as particular. “It’s myth that you have to spend a fortune to get something wonderful. One of the reasons we were given Master Florist status is because we can make even the simplest flower look wonderful. Anyone can create something stunning with big expensive flowers … the skill is to create something beautiful for £10 as much as £100. It may be smaller but it won’t be any less stunning.” |
